Konstantinov Academic Russian Drama Theater

The KonstantinovAcademic Russian Drama Theater has always been and remains a part of the multinational culture of the Mari ElRepublic. It introduces the audience to the best examples of the Russian and foreign, classical and modern drama.

The Russian Drama Theater has been opened in Yoshkar-Ola since 1919. At first it was a Russian troupe at the Mari Theatre. An entire epoch in the theater life was the time of work of GeorgyKonstantinov, the People's artist of the Russian Federation, Honored Artist of the RSFSR, laureate of state prize of the Mari Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, as the theater director.

At present, the theater takes pride of place in the cultural life of the republic. Modern reading of the classics and up-to-date drama are combined in the performances with a high theatrical culture. It is expressed in such performances as the Gamblers by Nikolay Gogol, Enough Stupidity in Every Wise Man by Aleksandr Ostrovsky, Inishmaan int. by Martin McDonagh, The Lower Depths by Maxim Gorky, etc.
